Why People Hate Art

Journal Entry: Sun Dec 4, 2011, 6:34 AM

I found this talk very interesting and absolutely agreeable as it makes some sound arguments against some of the bullshit that's going on in the art world and how to go about remedying it.

From the video's description:

"Art is often nothing more than a footnote to a (poorly written) essay making an unsound argument that uses technical and scientific terms inappropriately and without justification in an attempt to apply a veneer of rigour over their steaming pile of banal observations and utter nonsense.

This talk is a criticism of that tendency in the art world.

I don't know, I do art for more then one reason... I honestly do not even know anymore why I bother sharing it....

Some of my reasoning's....
...to make my dreams and nightmares solid... so i can deal with it and or try to figure it out.
...to express my inside feelings that i don't have words for...
...to practice and hopefully get better at communicating...
...to fix the broken feelings inside myself from a life time of fighting for my beliefs of "little house on the prairie fairness and honesty" in a world build on EVERYTHING is MINE!...

Honestly, over the years I have become a little bitter towards art, seeing the same thing resold/given attentions a 1000 times over while i starve for food for my stomach and attentions for my art... seeing fan art sold as if it belongs to the seller while my art is keep hidden behind a wall of it [never even seen], parodies of others ideas flooding the market and taking the LIMITED sales while I sit here poor and invisible... It just seems to me that people of today in general have NO integrity or responsibility to being truthful with themselves or anyone else for that matter.
Because most people seem better at telling lies then I am at expressing my own truth I have overall given up on my dream of being an PROFESSIONAL artist...

My personal professional [all to real history]: I got my degree in commercial art and advertising design in 1992 and opened up my own silk screen business in 1993 [the business failed]. So i went to work in my field... It didn't work out real well from my own mistakes [transgendered/ fired for it] and overall blacklisted in my home town for it afterward... I accepted SSI disability as my pretend art grant.... Kept to myself and a small "tribe" of trusted friends and started focusing on animal rescues [animals are the only honest creatures in this world of mankind] <- my opinion]... I built up my artwork for 20 years trying to finish enough art to create my own art table book <- my life goal for the last 20 years. I give myself pretend daily art jobs to try to keep myself busy. I have tried my best to be genuine with everyone about my art... When I 1st came to DA 2.5 years ago, I had big dreams and worked hard to get them started... I forum-ed regularly and got involved in chat rooms, I even spent every free penny I had on addcast/shiney adds to "catch myself up" with exposure for my 1st 6 months here... [which honestly backfired emotionally being when I ran out of money I ran out of views... which just lead to depression and me feeling like I paid for the exposure and didnt earn it through my years of hard work :<... I've WANTed to be part of the community but feel nothing but disconnected and ignored here...

* [DA also happens to be my 1st online community [facebook and myspace only 2 months prior was technically my 1st two] but I did not really get into them and came here. I don't even know why I bothered typing all this out... sorry for the wall of text and thanks for sharing the video... it got me thinking....

after rechecking what i wrote, i want to clarify something... I have met many many wonderful artist/people here... I was expressing my art feelings which are more then just personal interactions... Art to me is like a visual diary.... and as such my visual emotions are on the line when i discuss it.

Art - apart from social realism - is best understood intuitively. Those who go to great lengths to explain every aspect of their work are merely propping up an empty corpse. The pieces that most appeal to me are ones that strike a chord that I never knew existed.

Watching this reminded me of a critique I wrote about the way we're taught to analyze poetry and stories in high school. [link] It touches on some of the same points and I can definitely agree with the sentiment these two artists have.

"Des Königs Neue Kleider" is something I thought of at first :D at that story is how old?! :|

It has become a thing in the art world to make people feel dumb. That is a way of saying "hey, we are better, smarter, better educated and more intelligent than you!" so if you don't understand this piece of art it is your own fault. It's a way of creating their own elite world. Full of blowing sugar up each other's ass.

*sigh*

Art is about many many things, but in the first place it is about a visual. If nobody can understand what they are seeing without the artist describing it, it's not working. It like a website… if you have to explain what every button does with at least 2 sentences it is bad design/UI. Now art is not design… but it is similar! Both has to be understood without an explanation. Only that design is more or less something that has to be understood to be used, while art has to be understood to be felt.

I've once had a discussion about a spoon with holes. From a design point of view its useless, bad design. From an art point of view it could be a symbol for a eating disorder.
(There also were ideas for a spoon that could be used to sprinkle sugar on pancakes if you enhance the design a bit more, but that's a different story.)

People hate art, because the "art world" hates people.

On the other hand, this scheme isn't exclusive to the world of art, but in the context of art the scheme seems even more absurd. Even people wanna exploit others, that's one thing. Though in this scenario like addresses in the video, I have the impression that people are absolutely willing to be fooled about art. I bet a lot of them even see through the scheme but go with it nonetheless due to peer pressure. In this part of the art world you could probably be completely honest and open about being such an artist and you'd still get such sheepish admirers because they're so used to the bullshit that they wouldn't expect or suspect anything else.

It's the age old division between academics and practical people that give art such a low name. Art isn't low, it's just a different way of expressing things like an academic would write an essay or something like that. The academics always win because they have a better understanding of how things work compared to practical people, who understand how to make things work.

There always has to be a reason for things now, I don't think artists need a reason to do something if they and several others can understand it anyways.
